The universe works in mysterious ways. Coincidently in addition to the JWST first image reveal, today is also the 25th anniversary of the film Contact based on the novel by Carl Sagan. Until this day, the opening sequence is still the best ever.
I remember going to the cinema several times when it first came out. 1997 was a very important year for me, 2 of my all-time favourite films came out, Contact and Gattaca – points in my timeline that inspired me further to study astrophysics at university.
I was so excited when Contact came out. I read Sagan’s novel before the film not to mention I visited the VLA as a wee boy some years before. By now I think I’ve visited the VLA more times than I can remember haha. Hands down, the book is a million times better but the film is one of the best space films OUT THERE.
What a great way to celebrate the JWST deep field image today by watching Contact.
