The Cosmic Author

Say hi to the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy. This historical image of Sagittarius A* was released today, thanks to the amazing work by the Event Horizon Telescope. The majestic power of science at work.

That black hole is the cosmic author – writing and narrating the story of our galaxy, the story of us. To see a picture of it for the first time through human eyes is transcendent, to say the least.

The physics of black holes is new physics. A new era of exploration. This image shows Einstein’s theory of general relativity is right (again) but we have so much to learn yet. This is the second time humanity has taken a picture of a black hole. Remember M87? Oh boy, that was a doozy.

But this one is special. This one is our black hole, at the very heart of the Milky Way galaxy – the cosmic heartbeat of humanity’s past, present, and future. Welcome to the next page of our story, the greatest story of all spacetime.

Now my crazy mind is buzzing with excitement. It’s past midnight and I’m unable to sleep. I’m back to being 11 years old, learning about black holes for the first time – when I wondered if our galaxy had a black hole and imagined what that would look like.

Sweet cosmic dreams
